Growing up in small-town central Alaska, I know a thing or two about this state. More uniquely so, I’ve spent the last 9 years living in other states and countries, visiting my home state once a year since 2011. Each time back it gives me a strange combination of feelings. I’m in my home that I know so well, yet I’m only a traveler - my time to enjoy this incredible state is always limited. On one hand it can be a little difficult knowing you only have such little time to enjoy your homeland, but on the other – it has forced me to make the most of it. I’ve been all over the state traveling, camping, fishing, staying in various hotels, using RVs, kayaking, taking boat tours, etc. – but this last summer I discovered a mode of travel that easily takes the crown of the best way to travel Alaska. And it’s not even close.
Traveling Alaska is not like traveling in other places. It may be similar to some more remote areas in southern Chile, or northern Canada, but Alaska is truly unique. What is special about traveling in Alaska is that you can arrive in a place with absolutely breathtaking scenery, and still have it completely to yourself. What is difficult however, is that this state is incredibly large (more than twice the size of Texas) with only 737,500 people. This unique challenge means that public transportation and other modes of travel make it incredibly difficult to get to these amazing places unless you chose a compatible mode of travel.
The beauty of van travel in Alaska is it strikes a perfect combination of wild and comfortable. It allows you to reach places that you could only enjoy weathering the potentially harsh Alaskan weather conditions with a tent – while ensuring your home stays warm, dry, and comfortable no matter where you go. This last summer my girlfriend and I were able to reach numerous more remote places, go on hikes, still get to a supermarket when we needed, and sleep every single night on the shores of a different river. Sleeping to river sounds has always been one of our things. It was amazing, and so easy to do every night when you’re van traveling Alaska.
What made it even more special is the actual van that we used. Her name was ‘Beluga’ and she’s a custom ‘DIY’ van built and owned by Alaska Vans based out of Anchorage. What we noticed most was all of the small things you would never think about until you’re actually van life-ing around this great state. It became more and more obvious that whoever had built this custom design had on numerous occasions said, ‘oh that would be nice to have’, during their own van life experiences. Little things like outdoor rugs, the way the included water containers were set up so conveniently for cooking, a built in wine-glass holder, and many other little things that I’d rather not say because they’re really nice surprises to find on your own if you ever do the same yourself! When you take out an Alaska Van it’s not just a van, it’s a little traveling home that allows you to see Alaska on your own terms, on your own schedule, and with the ultimate freedom and flexibility.
Though it’s hard to choose a wrong way to travel Alaska, I can only truly recommend one over any other. It’s a unique place for the adventurous un-cruisers. A mode of travel that allows you to blend in to the environment, instead of sticking out. Your own little cabin in the mountains. A terrestrial spaceship capable of transporting you to a place that’s always been. Alaska Vans travel is the best way to travel Alaska, and it’s not even close.
